01 / The biography

A life between borders.

Born in France in 1982 to an Ethiopian father and a Mexican mother, Muchacho Eshetu grew up hearing the world in more than one key.

Childhood in Lyon meant French outside the front door, his father's Ethiopian records on Sunday mornings, and his mother's Spanish songs drifting through the kitchen. Music was never one language. It was the thing that connected them.

He began recording after hours in a borrowed room, building small, intimate songs from tape hiss, drum machines and late-night melodies. Moving to Paris in his twenties brought a new sound: dusky synthesizers, patient bass lines and a voice that seemed to arrive from somewhere just beyond the room.

His artistic universe draws on the spaciousness of alternative R&B, the melodic spirit of Ethiopian jazz and the warmth of Latin balladry. Themes of distance, belonging and the lives we might have lived run through every release.

“Home isn't a place I left. It's a sound I carry.”

The road back to Addis.

A journey through his father's homeland. Coffee, conversations, mountain air — and the kind of silence that becomes a song.

Muchacho at an Addis cafe, in the Ethiopian highlands and in a recording studio
01 / Addis Ababa

Before the city wakes.

A quiet cafe becomes the first stop: coffee poured slowly, family stories told twice, and a notebook left open on the table.

02 / The highlands

A different kind of quiet.

Beyond the capital, the landscape changes the pace. Wind, footsteps and long roads become the textures of a new musical chapter.

03 / Back to the room

Bring the feeling home.

The sessions favour live percussion, unhurried keys and first takes. Less polish. More of the room. A little more of himself.

04 / Moving pictures

The arrival.

Fifteen seconds. A room washed in red. A face that looks strangely familiar.

Step inside the evening. Watch The Arrival.

Notes after midnight.

In the notes for After the Last Light, Muchacho describes leaving Paris with a recorder and no finished songs. Addis gives him a different starting point: ordinary conversations, the rhythm of traffic, the space between words. The album's centrepiece, “Father's Radio,” is built around the memory of music playing in the next room.
“Luna de Addis” is a song about a call that crosses cities and time zones. Its refrain moves between French and Spanish, while the instrumental nods to Ethiopian melodic colours. The point is less translation than recognition: sometimes a feeling arrives before the words do.
Every artist has a mystery. Muchacho's happens to be a remarkably familiar face. Between the photographs and the late-night stories, one question keeps returning: haven't we met before? Some answers belong at the very end of the record.
